ATEX certification and specifications
Others promise, Renzmann delivers safety
Our distillation units and industrial washing machines meet the requirements of the ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU. This sets out the basic health and safety requirements for equipment and protective systems in potentially explosive atmospheres.
Zone classification according to ATEX: The frequency of occurrence of an explosive atmosphere counts
- Zone 0: Area in which an explosive atmosphere is present continuously, for long periods or frequently. (All devices installed in zone 0 must comply with category 1).
- Zone 1: Area in which an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur occasionally during normal operation. (All devices installed in zone 1 must comply with at least category 2).
- Zone 2: Area in which an explosive atmosphere occurs only rarely and for short periods. (All devices installed in zone 2 must comply with at least category 3).

Device groups and categories according to ATEX
ATEX distinguishes between equipment groups and categories as well as zone classifications at the place of use:
- Equipment groups: Group I (mining) and Group II/III (industry; gases or dusts). Relevant for our products: Group II (gases/vapors).
- Categories & zones: The device categories 1/2/3 correspond to the classification of the occurrence of an explosive atmosphere in zones 0/1/2 (gas) - the more frequently an explosive atmosphere can occur, the higher the requirement for the device.
Special feature of Renzmann distillation units
In contrast to many other manufacturers, we define zone 0 inside our distillation units, because even if the explosive atmosphere no longer exists at times under vacuum conditions (lack of oxygen), we believe that an explosive atmosphere is at least frequently present. This may be the case when refilling during operation and is actually the case every time the distillation process is started up and shut down.
Other manufacturers argue that the occurrence of such an atmosphere during distillation under vacuum is only occasional and make a less strict zone classification (i.e. zone 1) on the basis of this assessment. We clearly do not share this assessment: for us, machine and operational safety have the highest priority - without any restrictions.
Renzmann stands for uncompromising safety in ATEX protection
This means that, in addition to all electrical devices, all moving mechanical parts inside the distillation bubble are also type-tested and approved for permanent operation in Ex zone 0.
This increases security and protects your processes in the long term.
What this means for your Renzmann machine
- Zone-compatible design and avoidance of ignition sources: Correct selection of suitable devices by Renzmann according to the application and the prevailing zone.
- Documentation & marking: EU Declaration of Conformity, CE and Ex marking in accordance with 2014/34/EU.
Our claim
We supply ATEX-compliant machines for operation with flammable solvents. This is based on Directive 2014/34/EU (current version) and the associated guidelines of the EU Commission. In addition, we comply with the Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC) (from 01.07.2027 Machinery Directive 2023/1230) and the Pressure Equipment Directive (2014/68/EU) for corresponding devices.
